After burning too many vegetables on the stove, I bought a vegetable steamer. I only use distilled water in it just out of caution of forming deposits, and it does use a lot of water--about two cups for each meal. It also takes a bit longer to cook things than the instructions say. I give it 30 minutes for rutabagas and sweet potatoes. But it works well. I often use it to cook two things at a time on the two different levels. I've had it over a year and have had no problems.

We had a very old model of the Black and Decker Steamer/Rice cooker. It was terrific but died after probably 15 years. This is just a new improved version of our original. We have been very pleased with the new one. The only fault I have is no cook book came with it. Luckily we still have the book that came with our original.

This steamer is the bomb... I am so glad that I read the reviews... Cleanup is easy, avoid dishwasher and just use paper towels or a towel to cleanup and prolong the life of the plastic. One big plus on this unit is the water reserve tray (the most important part of the sell), which is below the steamer trays and can be easily drained and dried out with a towel... no worring about mold building up there!!!
Regarding the cooking times... The manual for this product does not include cooking times (there's a sticker on the back of the product that does). But if you want to print out something like I did, I found a manual for the scentless Black & Decker Model that does include more cooking times then the sticker. Here are the links, the model number is HS11501050 you can select and print yourself at:

I just bought my mom one as a gift right before I wrote this review... And will probably be buying these as Christmas gifts this year or for someone's birthday... A healthier way of living, and tastier too!!!
Enjoy!!! :) :) :)

This B&D double steamer has never failed to operate. Easy to clean by hand or dishwasher. However, I learned that using a steamer to cook requires the cook to learn a new way of cooking. No two food items have the same cook time. It requires babysitting, juggling, guess work, strategizing how to get your foods cooked ending at the same time, without putting any vegetables to mush. With a steamer, there is NO such thing as set it and forget it. I like the steamer for RICE! Again, you will need to experiment with the rice recipe, tweaking your type of rice:water:time ratio. The flavor scenter did nothing for my vegetables/foods when cooking. Use only bottled water unless you don't mind mineral build up on your unit. This is a large appliance in my small kitchen, and the appliance cooks only rice for my purposes.
