I ordered this thinking it was an 8-cup size as advertised, but it is actually 16-cup size. I got misled by the product info and urge others to think twice if you are here for smaller sizes. The same product is listed at [...] as 16-cup. I haven't used the product yet and am thinking of returning it.

  
"nice cooker, but scorches rice after a while" 2010-08-31

It does it's job very well. It cooks the rice nicely BUT if you leave it on warm for too long it will begin to scorch the bottom of the rice. I personally don't mind a little scorching because it adds texture but I can see how this will annoy people. That's why I gave it 4 stars because of the scorching. If you want to use the warming function to its full effect, you really can't because it begins to scorch the rice. Also, if it's warming for a while it starts to make this weird clicking noise. I hope it doesn't indicate any problems in the future. It's a well thought out design. I really like the steamer tray and the condensation reservoir. It comes with a miniature ladle and a rice paddle. The price is very good and the overall package is a great value.

I purchased this rice cooker mainly to cut down on the time required keeping track of brown rice. Not only does it not save any time or hassle, it doesn't even do white rice well. Regardless of ratio of rice to water, setting etc. the rice (white and brown) always ends up sticking or burning and usually undercooked until I add more water and try to bring it back to an edible state. The company has been totally unresponsive to several attempts to figure out why this piece of junk doesn't work.

Does a good job of steaming vegetables. I haven't used it to cook rice yet. The one thing I was a little surprised to discover is that while there is a delay timer to start the cooker at a preset time, it does not have a timer to cook the veggies, unless I missed something. I have to use a separate timer but it does the job. A little nit is there is a clear plastic piece that captures the water condensation when the lid is opened. The manual says nothing about this since it needs to be drained after each use. It is easy to take out the piece, wash it and replace it but I was surprised the manual didn't mention it.

Shortly after using this steamer, the little tabs in the steaming basket that hold the bottom tray in place broke off one by one. Then the flavor scenter screen started to deteriorate and rip. Last but not least, the steam basket bottom tray just broke in half in my hands. We have not even had this steamer for 6 months. My husband insists on cooking his quinoa and millet in the rice bowl, but I will not eat anything that has been cooked in plastic as it is carcinogenic. This appliance is a waste of money.

I purchased this 1-Tier Steamer, as all the others are for three-course meals. I just want to steam some brocolli, etc. It replaced a 15 year-old BD model. The plastic pot feels much cheaper and fragile than that of my old model. However, it works great for steaming vegetables. For the price, you can't go wrong.

Strike 1: Poor design
Lid doesn't fit steamer basket. The lid is slightly more oval than the steamer basket and so it doesn't line up correctly. You need a lid that adheres to the steamer basket to lock in the steam. How lame can you be in quality design? I'm suprised because I have always trusted the Black and Decker name.
Strike 2: Service Center at doesn't answer phone during stated hours of operation.
Tried calling the 800 231 9786 service phone number at 7:30pm PST tonight to see if they would send me replacement lid, but their office is closed. The service number says thay are open until 11pm EST. Lame. I'm going to repackage and return to Amazon. Don't need the hassle. I'll buy another brand.

Had a B&D steamer for years but the large bowl cracked. It was still operable but I wanted to replace it. The new steamer has a different (oval) configuration, and requires the use of the flavor assembly in order for the business end to work. The "flavor assembly" allows you to add herbs or other stuff to flavor what you are steaming. It's alittle corroded after only 3 uses (I added nothing to the actual flavor screen,but the steam probably corroded it a little.) No matter. For the price it is an excellent way to prepare rice with never, never a sticky mess. Go for it.

"What happened to the quality and design from previous model" 2010-07-15

I've used the Black & Decker steamers every other day for 14 years. They last about 7 years of heavy usage. Unfortunately, I tried my new one with a new design. How do I get water into the little spout, it's really tough. I asked my wife and she said, no big deal, then proceeded to spill water all over the place and had to mop the water up. Why go backward in a design? And the the water tray was empty before I did a minimum amount of rice. That's never happened before on my older model, even for double the amount of rice. Do I have to stand and watch it now? I have to work and watching a steamer steam is not cost effective and boring. The instructions say I can add more rice to the cup, but it doesn't tell me the time. The timing is different than my old one so do I have to guess the time? I never use the flavor scent so I toss it immediately. I can't on the new one since the basket won't fit if removed. There were two nice finger holds under the older version to easily lift the entire unit. They disappeared and I can't get my fat fingers under the unit now. How am I supposed to pick it up? The plastic steamer basket is really flimsy now. I don't think it's going to last 7 years of every other day usage this time. The clear plastic unit is flimsy as well.It did the steaming ok, but I burned myself trying to get the unit to the sink and the top off. If you have a perfect design, why go backward? That's why very popular car companies stick with the design that works and only modify slightly with improvements. They don't leave cup holders out of the new models and forget to include power stearing. I've purchased many of these units for friends over the years and highly recommend them. What happened?

I have had 2 B&D steamers in the past - gave one to my mother to encourage them to steam veggies and she decided she loved it. Recently gave my second one to my Dad and his wife as my Dad was discovered to have diabetes and encouraged them to use it and they love all the variations of cooking that can be done with a steamer - so ordered a new one for me. I'm a little bit discontented with the quality and desig of this B&D steamer compared to my 2 older models. It steams well and the oval shape is more user friendly- but if you are going to add any extra water to it through the spout on the side for that purpose - you must first lift off the very hot top part which is not a safe operation and empty the catch basin part because if you don't it will run over with the addition of the extra water steaming off! I wish they still made the older round model and am glad that I gave those to the folks I was encouraging to use a steamer because they are sturdier and easier to use.

Definitely worth the price paid. The steamer is very roomy and allows you to cook more than one veggie at a time. Great for corn on the cob and other garden vegetables. Very efficient and fast to fix a meal without having to keep an eye on it. Leave it alone and let it do the cooking. Very healthy alternative to boiling on the stove.

Just brought this today. Brought it home and cooked 6 hard boiled eggs to perfection. This alone is a big plus for me. Then I steam some brocoli and again perfect! Then I threw in some shredded cabbage and yes again perfect. I know this will be a well used item in my kitchen. I am going to get another one for my daughter for Christmas. Do not hesitate to buy this item. I am diabetic and this is a great way to steam my foods with little effort. Suzanne

This is a great little machine. I use it almost every night for dinner. Steams vegetables out of the garden in about 15 minutes. Just one of the steaming containers makes more than 3 people could eat. I typically use one steaming container and the rinse and put in the dishwasher. The next night I use the other one and then wash them both at the same time. Easy to clean and very efficient. I would recommend this to anyone.

I use this steamer nearly daily. Fruits, veggies, fish, chicken, rice, eggs - it does them all. Top rack of dishwasher safe (though, I've put the steamer baskets in the bottom rack before without a problem - but don't use a dry cycle) for all but the base unit.
Pros:
-Nice size rice bowl for a family of four
-Double-deck allows cooking of multiple foods
-Easy to clean with snap-out bottoms of baskets
-Easy to store, nests down to one-basket height for storage
Cons:
-Hard to clean heating nub
-Steam is unevenly distributed by design of the "flavor tray"
-Doesn't hold large items, like globe artichokes, easily
